The Language Nest Assistant is part of a team that works with children as they participate in Okanagan cultural activities and learning the Okanagan language. The Language Nest Assistant will participate in the supervision, interaction and care of children within the language nest house. PURPOSE AND KEY FOCUSThe Language Nest Assistant will be responsible for working with children as they participate in the language nest program. The program provides a solid foundation for early years Okanagan culture and language learning which fosters physical, intellectual, emotional, social development. The Language Nest Assistant will work alongside instructors to creatively foster the cultural identity of the children. JOB SUMMARYThe Language Nest Assistant will support participating Elders in speaking the Okanagan language with children. The Language Nest Assistant will assist with supervision within the language nest house and will help plan for language and culture programs. REPORTING STRUCTURE Reports to the Language Nest Coordinator JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAssist the Language Nest Coordinator in the following:Assist Elders with organization of material and activities Practice Okanagan language and cultural activities Assist in managing respectful child/adult interactions Be a positive role model for behaviour Prepare snacks and meals for children Develop and maintain a good working relationship with parents All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIESAttend staff meetings and professional development day training as required Communicate to educators any pertinent information regarding children, parents, staff, and the program etc., including incident and first aid reporting Type, file, and duplicate materials Participate in community events as requested Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures Performs other duties as requiredQUALIFICATIONSEducationGrade 12 minimum Current First Aid/CPR certificate Class 4 drivers? license Preference for individuals proficient in the Okanagan LanguageExperienceExperience working with children 1-5 years old and their parents Experience working in an Okanagan language and cultural immersion environment Experience working with First Nations communities Competencies (KSAs & Desired Attributes)Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity Punctual Ability to exercise tact and discretion Honest, trustworthy and respectful Competent computers skills, specifically MS Word and MS Excel Ability to work within a team and individually Please send resume, cover letter and references in any one of two ways:Email: recruiting@okanagan.orgMail or drop off: 12420 Westside Road, Vernon, BC V1H 2A4If you have accessibility needs, please contact Hollie Lachuk @ 250-542-4328 ext. 1011The successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check that includes the vulnerable sector and three references
