People like you!This is moderately complex clerical work in the preparation and calculation of payroll for all municipal employees including processing a variety of records and source material. An employee of this class verifies data relative to payroll source material and/or control and master file records, processes Addition Change Forms and answers enquiries regarding payroll maters. The work is performed within well established policies and procedures and requires a higher degree of accuracy. Independent judgement and action is exercised in setting daily priorities in accordance with established deadlines. Matters of policy and more complex issues are referred to a supervisor who reviews the work performance in terms of accuracy, adherence to deadlines and conformance with established policies and procedures. Prepares payroll from source material, calculates, inputs and verifies recurring and one-time payroll entries such as acting pay, sick pay and workbook deductions; performs master data maintenance for transactions such as indemnity, transportation allowances, transit passes, quota adjustment arrears and retirement payments; conducts bi-weekly union audits. Calculates insurable weeks and earnings for unemployment insurance purposes and prepares separation certificates; calculates acting pay rates; prepares manually issued cheques as required for separation, rate changes and acting pay or to replace stop payment cheques. Checks Addition Change Forms for accuracy, records relevant information and verifies output data for accuracy. Checks Sickness and Accident Time Loss Reports for completeness, accuracy and employee eligibility for coverage, completes sick claim reports. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by completion of the Payroll Fundamentals 1 course of the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) courses, plus some experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices and principles applicable to the preparation, calculation and completion of payroll; of the rules, regulations, policies and agreements applicable to the work performed. Sound knowledge of an enterprise system payroll module or Human Resources Management Software (HRMS). Ability to understand and apply regulations, agreements and payroll procedures and to perform calculations with speed and accuracy; to deal tactfully and effectively with internal and external contacts on payroll matters. Ability to perform the work within prescribed deadlines; to prepare and maintain correspondence, records and files related to the work; to verify, validate and ensure accuracy of entries.
