*The opportunity:*
Reporting to the Senior Editor, the Editorial Assistant ? Acquisitions will assist in the development of the Press?s reputation as a first-class publisher of scholarly books. From the initial assessment of book proposals, to the transmission of final manuscripts into production, the successful candidate will help to ensure that UMP authors have a timely and positive experience as their manuscripts undergo peer review, revision, and publication. That work will require communication and collaboration with Press colleagues, academic and community authors, university administrators, and external funders. In general, the assistant will provide administrative and editorial support to the Senior Editor, with a view to acquiring independently to develop and expand UMP?s list.
*The qualifications and experience we?re looking for:*
* Completion of a formal training program in a related discipline from a recognized institute required.
* BA or college diploma in Humanities or Social Sciences preferred. MA or equivalent education and experience an asset.
* Relevant experience in academia (eg., administration) will be considered.
* Publishing certificate/credits or relevant editorial experience preferred.
* Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required.
* Knowledge of the key areas in which the Press publishes (Indigenous studies, Canadian history) preferred.
* An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
* Excellent research and communication skills required.
* Exceptional attention to detail required.
* Strong interpersonal skills required.
* Good time management required to juggle multiple manuscripts in all stages of assessment, review, and production required.
* Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat required.
* Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
* Familiarity with scholarly writing and understanding of scholarly apparatus, such as documentation, tables, and figures preferred.
* Familiarity with the Canadian Oxford dictionary and Chicago Manual of Style (and other style guides, e.g., MLA, APA), as well as proficiency with spelling, grammar, and usage, preferred.
* Familiarity with and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Calls to Action required.
* Indigenous/BIPOC candidates encouraged.
