Nelson Police DepartmentDeputy Chief ConstableCompetition #24EX87 The City of Nelson serves a resident population of just over 11,000, located in the Selkirk Mountains on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake in the Southern Interior of British Columbia. The City of Nelson is a growing community represented by many diverse cultures and provides access to an array of recreational and employment opportunities. The Nelson Police Department has a committed leadership team and dedicated Sworn and Civilian members who proudly serve the City of Nelson. The Nelson Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Deputy Chief Constable. The successful candidate will be a highly credible individual and will promote and maintain a visible and respected profile for the Nelson Police Department. In addition to being responsible for operational and administrative areas, the Deputy Chief Constable works closely with the Chief Constable to provide leadership and vision to the dedicated staff that provide essential policing services to the community. The Nelson Police Department has a complement of 23 Sworn Officers and 17 Civilian members. Those members work in various areas, including Uniform Patrol, General Investigation Section, Beat Unit, Restorative Justice, Victim Services, and the Communications Section. The new Deputy Chief will have demonstrated abilities and knowledge in modern law enforcement and crime prevention practices and in addition, must hold or have held the confirmed rank of Sergeant of higher within a Canadian Police Agency; have a minimum of five years experience in a leadership role; an undergraduate degree in a related field or equivalency; experience with supervision and community policing, In addition, they will possess considerable experience in community engagement and building relationships both internally and externally. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and have the ability to make decisions and take personal responsibility for actions that are consistent with high ethical policing standards. Of equal importance, the candidate must possess the desire and ability to build strong rapport within the diverse Nelson community. The successful candidate should demonstrate a progressive record of hands-on policing and operational management. The candidate should highlight relevant experience and educational background. The successful candidate should also possess the ability to communicate effectively within the organization and with all sectors of the community, to problem solve, be technically inclined and have a reputation for fairness and impartiality.
