Transitional housing facility Horizons at 106 (formerly the Comfort Inn in St. John’s) is now fully staffed with full-time and casual support workers, security, hospitality staff, health staff and administration. The building's lease and facility operations cost the N.L. Government about $13M annually which has a capacity of 100 residents.
N.L. Health Services has reported that agency nurse use is down 42% from its highest point. The N.L. Government still plans to cut the number of agency nurses working in the health care system to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels by 2026, however, there are still instances where they could be used if recruiting staff proves challenging.
The Government of Canada has partially reversed course on its decision to cut economic immigration numbers in N.L. and has offered to increase spaces by an additional 1,000 spaces, for a total of 2,525 newcomer spots per year, though still less than the previous 3,050 spaces. N.L. has agreed to also take in 290 humanitarian migrants over the next 2 years.
The N.L. Government is introducing new recruitment and retention initiatives for paramedicine. The new supports include a skills advancement program for emergency medical responders to advance skills to become primary care paramedics, a tuition relief program, and an educational travel subsidy for students.
NL Health Services has announced plans to fund the Emergency Medical Responder certification program in Central Labrador that starts in January 2025 for applicants committed to working for the authority afterward. Financial support will include the cost of the program as well as travel, accommodation, and meals for in-person training.
The Gathering Place’s Mercy House expansion in St. John’s has been completed and will feature a new emergency shelter as well as 52 supportive and transitional living spaces and access to other supports. The N.L. Government provided $2M to the project along with about $3.5M in operating funding, while the Government of Canada provided $5.9M.
