Job Bank and the National Occupational Classification (NOC)
national-occupational-classificationThe National Occupational Classification (NOC) is the national reference for occupations in Canada. It provides a systematic classification structure that categorizes the entire range of occupational activity in Canada for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating occupational data for labour market information and employment-related program administration.
The NOC provides a common reference framework for employers, job seekers and other key players in the labour market. This is why Job Bank uses it as foundation to deliver critical services such as:
- Advertisement of job postings: To post on Job Bank, employers are not required to write their own job description. Instead, they select pre-defined options (job title, duties, requirements, etc.) that are associated to the NOC.
- Matching employers and job seekers: When they sign up on Job Bank, job seekers can get matched with jobs they are qualified for. To do so, they fill out a profile by choosing options from pre-defined lists tied to the NOC and compatible with those used by employers when posting a job.
- Dissemination of labour market information: Job Bank offers various labour market information products that allow people to learn about different occupations for research or career planning purposes. This information is organized by NOC codes.
